Finland Ice Marathon 2010

Kuopio welcomes everyone interested in ice skating to the 27th Finland Ice Marathon 17th - 20th February 2010 !

The programme of the event is well established. School children start the series of events of Finland Ice Marathon on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th February. We hope the skating event for school children turns out to be an equally popular event with an enthusiastic atmosphere as it was in February 2009 when approximately 7 500 pupils were enjoying ice skating and a large number of other activities for two days.

Friday´s Moonlight Skating will be maintained in the Finland Ice Marathon programme as it was a great success in last year´s event. This atmospheric early evening event in Kuopio passenger harbour is intented for everyone regardless of wheather they take interest in ice skating or not. We welcome to Moonlight Skating especially skaters and tourists from elsewhere in Finland and abroad as it offers them a possibility to participate in the great atmosphere of this winter event.

Saturday 20th February is the main event day of Finland Ice Marathon which begins traditionally with a 200 km skating competition at 8am. After a year´s gap we will again see in this long distance race the world´s best marathon skaters as the Finland Ice Marathon 200 km is also the finale of the GP skating tournament organised by the Dutch Ice Skating Federation.

The other race distances are traditionally 100 km, 50 km and 25 km. All the race distances have separate starts for men and women. A new competition format in 2009 Finland Ice Marathon was a 50 km recreational skating event with ski poles which achieved great popularity with 170 participants, including a large number of female skaters. Recreational ski-pole skating was so popular that in the next event there will also be 25 km recreational skating event with ski poles. In addition there will be 12, 5 km recreational skating with assistive devices. These starts with ski poles allowed at 3pm are the last events of the day to ensure the ski poles do not disturb other ice skaters. The most traditional recreational skating event is the 12,5 km race.

The skating track on the lake Kallavesi is 12,5 km long and if the ice thickness permits it will be made 8-10 m wide. The start/ finish area of the skating track as well as the public services on land and in boats are situated in Kuopio passenger harbour only 1 km from the market place right at the heart of the city.
